Mercer Presenting at New York State Society of CPAs

Z. Christopher Mercer, ASA, CFA, ABAR, Founder and CEO of Mercer Capital, will present “Unlocking Private Company Wealth” and contribute to a panel discussion on Statutory Fair Value at the Business Valuation Conference sponsored by the New York State Society of CPAs on May 18, 2015.

During the presentation, Mercer will discuss concepts from his newest book, Unlocking Private Company Wealth, which focuses on managing the wealth represented by ownership of a private business. The book calls for business owners to treat their illiquid, private company wealth with the same care and respect as their liquid wealth. The ideas presented can help business owners turn their business into the liquidity-creating vehicle it needs to be for them to become independent of the business and truly free to sell it, stay with it, or transition it to others of their choice.

During the session, Chris will highlight tools and strategies business owners and advisors to business owners can glean including:

  • Don’t wait until it is too late.
  • The so-called “smart money tools” of private equity firms and public companies, like leveraged share repurchases, are available to private companies.
  • Managing the wealth locked in a private business is different than managing the business.

Chris will also participate in the panel “Business Divorce and Appraisers” with Peter A. Mahler and Justice Alan D. Scheinkman and moderator Sam Rosenfarb. Panelists will discuss business divorce and how a business appraiser assists in the process, updates on applicable case law, issues from a judge’s perspective, when to apply discounts and the type of discounts to apply, and dissolution and liquidation as an option.
