Insurance Stocks Recover in Second Quarter as Valuations Begin to Stabilize
Insurance stocks delivered mixed but generally improved performance in 2Q 2026. Managed Care led all tracked sectors (+54.4%) as several large-cap names rebounded from depressed 2025 levels. Life & Annuities matched the S&P 500 (+14.9%), while Standard P&C (+9.2%) and Specialty P&C (+4.9%) also posted solid gains. Brokers (+0.8%) were essentially flat, and InsurTech (-2.0%) was the only segment to decline.
Insurance broker shares stabilized following the first-quarter selloff but continued to lag the broader market, as investors weighed softer premium-rate and organic-growth trends alongside ongoing concerns about AI’s impact on the intermediary model.
Shares of Baldwin Insurance Group (BWIN) rose 21% during the quarter following reports that the Florida-based broker had retained advisors to explore a potential take-private transaction.
Improving sentiment toward defensive sectors supported favorable returns for Standard and Specialty P&C underwriters, which continue to report strong underwriting profitability, with median combined ratios of 92% and 90%, respectively.
M&A activity remained steady but below historical levels. Through the first half of 2026, announced U.S. broker transactions totaled 251 deals versus 301 during the same period last year, while underwriter activity also moderated. Strategic buyers remain active, though elevated financing costs and greater valuation discipline continue to weigh on deal volume.
The second quarter saw no new insurance IPOs. However, Hub International (the privately held brokerage backed by Hellman & Friedman) disclosed in late June that it had filed confidentially with the SEC for an IPO. Following its 2025 minority raise that reportedly valued the firm at $29 billion, this IPO would create one of the largest insurance broker listings in decades.
